ONYX HD 7100 BINDING PUNCH FIRST TO GET UNIVERSAL DIE
New Interchangeable Module Allows Heavy Duty Model To Create Virtually Any Punch Pattern*
Over the past decades, a number of mechanical binding technologies evolved to meet the needs of the on-demand printing, demonstrating both the creative power of the free market, and also the risk that the market can get out of hand. Today, the selection of popular mechanical binding methods includes double wire wire-o, plastic coil, metal coil, and Velobind. To this we can add a whole range of standard pitches: 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, .2475", 5:1, 6mm and 2.5: 1. There are at least 20 possibilities.
While it may sometimes seem that there are more hole patterns and binding element categories than are strictly necessary, the fact is that each of them brings a unique set of attributes to the desktop that differentiate them from the others: cost, aesthetics, ease of document page edit and lay flat characteristics. Nevertheless, a small bindery operation would need to make a sizeable investment in order to offer the whole range or even a modest selection of binding options.
A partial solution to the challenge has been the development of "modular" equipment that allows the user to create multiple types of hole patterns using only a single punch. The innovation was based on interchangeable dies that allow the punch equipment to be changed over to a number of different whole patterns.
Now, a Mexico City-based company has taken versatility to the next level with the roll out of the Universal Punch pattern, an innovative solution to the proliferation of binding hole patterns. The announcement of the internationally patented Universal Punch hole pattern follows ten years of research dedicated to standardizing a single shape that would accommodate all common binding methods*
The final hole profile is deceptively simple: an oblong shaped lozenge rounded on either end. Like most great ideas, this sleek solution looks like someone should have figured it out a long time ago. That reaction is consistent with the assertion of Universal Punch Commercial Director Carlos Lopez, who maintains that the engineering principle at work here is none other than Ockham's Razor:
"The simplest or most obvious explanation of several competing ideas is the one that is most likely to be correct."
The initial Universal Punch product entry into the binding market is a new Interchangeable Die Module for the Rhin-O-Tuff Onyx HD 7100 heavy-duty punch. Developed five years ago exclusively for BindRite dealers, the 14" electric modular punch had already incorporated a quick change die-system that allowed pattern flexibility. The new Universal Die Module will take that concept one step further, enabling machine operators to produce the full range of popular binding patterns without having to purchase a new die for each pattern. The add-on will create punch patterns for virtually all popular methods and pitches except comb binding.
RETROFITTABLLE FOR ANY RHIN-O-TUFF ONYX HD 7000 SERIES PUNCH
The same Universal Die Module being rolled out at Print '17 is compatible with any Rhin-O-Tuff Onyx HD 7000 Series punch, including the Onyx HD 7000, the Onyx HD 7700 Ultima and Onyx HD 7700HD.
In my opinion, the ability to tap into any one of these binding methods with a Rhin-O-Tuff HD 7000 Series modular punch is a big deal. With the "unified solution" at hand, a commercial printer, in-planet department or copy shop will be able to provide a whole gamut of options with a minimal capital outlay. The expense of extra punch pattern dies and the time required to change them out is eliminated.
The Onyx HD7100 and the Universal Punch Die Module will debut at booth #4156 at Print '17, Sept. 10 -14 at McCormick Place South.
