3:1 or 2:1 pitch?
Differences and selection criteria.
A key feature of wire comb binding is the pitch, which defines the distance and number of holes per inch. The two most common pitches are 2:1 and 3:1, each of which has specific characteristics and areas of application.
The main difference between the two pitches is in the binding capacity and the optical effect. The 3:1 pitch offers a finer, more aesthetically pleasing bind for thinner binding thicknesses, while the 2:1 pitch was developed for thicker book thicknesses and ensures a more robust bind. Both the number of pages and the desired visual impression should therefore be taken into account when choosing the appropriate pitch. To summarise, the choice between 2:1 and 3:1 for wire comb binding depends on the binding thickness of the document and the aesthetic requirements. With a paper weight of 70/80 g/m², up to a maximum of 135 sheets can be bound with the 3:1 pitch and up to 340 sheets with the 2:1 pitch. Both pitches offer the advantages of wire comb binding, including the possibility of complete 360° page turns and the flat position of the pages without any offset on the table.
